Report Summary
The above report covers the trade for YTD May 2008/09 financial year. The highlights of this report include:
- Total trade for the financial year to 31 May 2009 was 25.8 million mass tonnes - a decrease of 3.9% compared to the same period last year. This was mainly as a result of the cessation of the motor vehicle trade through Glebe Island in November 2008 and the reduction in crude oil imports.
- Non-containerised trade was 12.3 million mass tonnes (representing 47.9% of total trade in mass tonnes). Containerised trade was 12.5 million mass tonnes (48.6% of total trade in mass tonnes). The balance (0.90 million mass tonnes) comprised empty containers (3.5% of total trade in mass tonnes).
- Container trade performance for year to date (YTD) May 2008/09 was 1.66 million TEUs, up 2.0% on the same period last year.
- May 2009 container trade reached 141,300 TEUs which was a decrease of 4.3% on the same period last year. Predominately impacting on this result is the decrease in the export of empty containers (-20.0%) and the lesser impact of a decline in the import of full containers during the month of May 2009 (-6.9%).
- Total full container imports for YTD May 2008/09 reached 814,500 TEUs, up 0.3% on the corresponding period last year. The leading import regions were dominated by East Asia (44%), Europe (17%) and South East Asia (15%), which combined account for 76% of total full container imports through the ports of Sydney.
- Full container exports for YTD May 2008/09 reached 407,100 TEUs up 15.7% compared to the same period last year. The higher exports of timber, cereals, machinery and transport equipment and textile fabrics have been the primary drivers of the growth. Cereal exports continue to have strong growth as a result of favourable growing conditions in the North West and Central West regions of the State, up 59% YTD May 2008/09 on the same period last year.
- Exports of empty containers for YTD May 2008/09 decreased 7.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 415,700 TEUs. Empty container exports performance is directly linked to the growth of full container imports. As such, the decrease of empty container exports through the ports of Sydney will continue when the movement in full container imports is lower than the movement in full container exports.
- Six of Sydney Ports’ top ten imported containerised commodities in TEUs traded above the previous year’s levels. The top imported commodities were headed by machinery and transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactures and chemical products, which combined represented 55.8% of all containerised goods imported through Sydney’s ports.
- The leading containerised exports in TEUs through the ports of Sydney for YTD May 2008/09 were chemical products, machinery and transport equipment and miscellaneous manufactures.
- Non-containerised imports for YTD May 2008/09 decreased 9.0% compared to the corresponding period last year, to 11.7 million mass tonnes. This was due mainly to lower crude oil imports, which decreased 21.8% on the same period last year. However in contrast, refined oil imports increased by 26.6%.
- Non-containerised exports decreased 41.6% to 0.64m mass tonnes for YTD May 2009/09. This decrease was mainly attributable to reduced propane coastal and New Zealand exports and lower refined oil exports
