Intermodal operations offer a range of landside logistics services and are primarily located in close proximity to areas of concentrated industrial development. Many intermodal operations now offer integrated services to meet the needs of their customers transporting freight to and from the port, such as an intermodal terminal that allows for the loading and unloading of containers and general cargo between road and rail based transport, empty container storage and warehousing facilities.
Sydney Ports Corporation purchased the intermodal terminal and empty container site at Cooks River in October 2005. The purchase of this site secures the continued operation of these services for port users and regional exporters at a location in close proximity to Port Botany and on the dedicated freight rail line. The site is managed by Maritime Container Services.
Sydney Ports Corporation purchased the site near Enfield Marshalling Yard in October 2000. The Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield is a proposed facility that would operate as an integrated development and include an intermodal terminal, empty container storage areas and warehousing. Sydney Ports received planning approval for the proposal in September 2007 and it is expected that the site will be operational by 2010. For more information on the proposed Enfield ILC, click here.
A number of intermodal terminals are in operation across metropolitan Sydney, rural and regional New South Wales. These terminals facilitate the movement of both imports and exports for shipment through Sydney and Port Botany.
Further details on intermodal terminals operating within NSW can be obtained from the Intermodal Terminal Guide. The Guide provides exporters and importers with practical information to assist in developing their supply chains and the efficient movement of goods.
