Intermodal Operations

Intermodal operations offer a range of landside logistics services and are primarily located in close proximity to areas of concentrated industrial development. Many intermodal operations now offer integrated services to meet the needs of their customers transporting freight to and from the port, such as an intermodal terminal that allows for the loading and unloading of containers and general cargo between road and rail based transport, empty container storage and warehousing facilities.

Cooks River

Sydney Ports Corporation purchased the intermodal terminal and empty container site at Cooks River in October 2005. The purchase of this site secures the continued operation of these services for port users and regional exporters at a location in close proximity to Port Botany and on the dedicated freight rail line. The site is managed by Maritime Container Services.

Enfield

Sydney Ports Corporation purchased the site near Enfield Marshalling Yard in October 2000. The Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield is a proposed facility that would operate as an integrated development and include an intermodal terminal, empty container storage areas and warehousing. Sydney Ports received planning approval for the proposal in September 2007 and it is expected that the site will be operational by 2010.

Metropolitan Sydney Intermodal Terminals

A number of intermodal terminals are in operation across metropolitan Sydney that service the movement of containers into and out of Port Botany and Sydney Harbour. These include terminals located in Sydney's west at Camellia, Leightonfield, Villawood and Yennora, and Sydney's south-west at Minto.

Further details on intermodal terminals in metropolitan Sydney can be obtained from the Sydney Ports Handbook.

Rural and Regional New South Wales Intermodal Terminals

A number of intermodal terminals are also in operation across rural and regional New South Wales that facilitate the movement of agricultural exports for shipment from Sydney's ports. These include terminals located in the central-west, including Bathurst, Blayney, Dubbo, Forbes and Parkes, the south-west at Cootamundra, and the north-west at Moree, Narrabri and Wee Waa.

Further details on intermodal terminals in rural and regional New South Wales can be obtained from the Sydney Ports Handbook.
