Port Authority of New South Wales Harbour Master has powers under the Marine Safety Act 1998 to direct and control the time and manner in which any vessel may enter or leave the port.
Safe navigation in the port area is maintained through an ongoing process of risk evaluation and mitigation of which Pilotage, Vessel Traffic Service and Port Procedures are all integral components.
Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay are both working harbours and areas of great recreational boating enjoyment.

Recreational craft must not to pass between the Port Authority of New South Wales escort vessel and the seagoing ship under escort.
