Sydney Ports is constructing an elevated pedestrian bridge over the Port Botany freight rail line at Banksia Street to ensure the safety of Botany residents.
The current pedestrian crossing facility is not signalised and, as a safety precaution, freight train operators are required to sound a horn and slow down when approaching the crossing. The completion of the bridge will eliminate this need, thereby reducing noise impacts on the local community.
The Botany Goods Line is owned by the Australian Rail and Track Corporation (ARTC) and being the only existing line into the Port Botany precinct, facilitates all freight rail movement that enters and leaves the port.
Sydney Ports Corporation is developing the port facilities for a third terminal operator with the Port Botany Expansion (PBE) to meet the anticipated growth in trade. The NSW Government is focused on increasing the rail modal share to and from Port Botany and it is anticipated that by 2020, 40 per cent of containers leaving the port precinct will be by rail.
The completed bridge will provide continuous pedestrian and wheelchair access linking both sides of Banksia Street and will eliminate the safety risk that the existing level crossing presents.
Throughout the works, the existing pedestrian crossing will remain open to the public. At the completion of the works - scheduled for the end of 2011 - the existing crossing will be closed permanently and the new overpass bridge will be accessible to the public.
