Sydney Ports Corporation has a key role to facilitate trade and a major goal to increase the amount of freight moved by rail throughout Sydney.

Sydney's  ports handle more than $50 billion in trade every year, providing direct and indirect employment to 17,000 people and making a valuable contribution to the NSW economy.

This volume of trade involves moving containers with goods that cater to the needs of the Sydney market.

85 per cent of the goods moved through our ports are packed and unpacked within metropolitan Sydney. At present, 21 per cent of these products are transported by rail. Sydney Ports supports the target of moving 40 per cent of containers by rail to and from Port Botany.

A significant proportion of these containers service the needs of inner and middle-western Sydney. This area is the destination for between 50 to 60 per cent of all container imports and the source of up to 30 per cent of all container exports.

The Project

To help move containers off roads and onto rail, Sydney Ports is developing a new Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield.

The project consists of:

  • an intermodal facility where containers will be moved on and off trains and trucks
  • warehouses where containers from trains can be stored and unpacked for delivery and where freight coming into the centre can be packed into containers for export
  • empty container storage facilities
  • a light industrial/commercial area along Cosgrove Road
  • an ecological/community area.
