Bulk Liquids Berth 2
Sydney Ports has received planning approval from the Department of Planning to develop a second Bulk Liquids Berth (BLB2) at Port Botany.
Sydney Ports has operated a Bulk Liquids Berth (BLB1) at Port Botany since 1979. This berth has been occupied on average between 50-60% of the time for the past ten years. In 2006-07, the trade in bulk liquids grew by 17.9 per cent. The main products handled at the BLB are oils, gases and chemicals / other bulk liquids
With the growth in trade at double digits, ship queuing is likely to occur, increasing costs which are then passed on to industry and ultimately to NSW consumers.
The BLB2 project comprises construction of a steel piled pier berth adjacent to the existing BLB1; associated infrastructure such as marine loading arms, fire fighting equipment, onshore support facilities and pipelines from existing user sites to the new berth. The open access, multi user berth will operate on a 24 hour/ 7 day per week basis.
BLB2 has been designed to accommodate 90,000 dead weight tonne vessels to a maximum of 270m length overall. These are the largest vessels forecast to service Sydney’s needs for the next 30 years.
