Major Projects

Sydney Ports Corporation manages and develops port facilities and services to cater for the existing and future trade needs of the State of NSW.

With Sydney's population expected to grow by nearly 1.2 million people over the next 25 years, we are continually evaluating the capacity of Sydney's ports and developing strategies to meet future needs. The port has experienced over seven per cent annual growth in trade for the past 25 years.

Planning for future needs involves developing land, acquiring strategic assets and enhancing current assets.

Our focus and strategic intent is on:

  1. The expansion of Port Botany for future container and bulk liquids trade

  2. Establishment of an Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield, linked by the existing dedicated freight rail to Port Botany and Glebe Island/White Bay, to facilitate the movement of import, export and empty containers

  3. Retention and continued operation of facilities in Sydney Harbour for non-containerised trade

Two major developments under way include the expansion of container handling facilities at Port Botany to meet increasing trade needs, and a proposal for the development of an Intermodal Logistics Centre at Enfield. This centre will enable an increasing amount of Sydney's freight to be moved by rail, reducing the burden on Sydney's roads.

Other projects in the pipeline include the development of a second bulk liquids berth at Port Botany, a new passenger gangway at the Overseas Passenger Terminal and a new cruise terminal.
