Environmental & Community Projects

Sydney Ports participates in a wide variety of environmental and community projects as a sign of its commitment to reducing impacts to the environment.

Clean Up Australia Day

This year was the 20th Anniversary of Clean Up Australia an event that was originally started to make a difference by cleaning up their local areas for a couple of hours and has now evolved to be Australia’s largest community-based environmental event (to go to the Clean Up Australia Day website, click here).

Sydney Ports first began participating in this wonderful event in 2008. Despite the rainy humid conditions, the tradition has continued with Sydney Ports again participating in 2010. This year saw Sydney Ports and Baulderstone (Port Botany Expansion’s construction contractors) staff and members of our community groups remove 34 bags of rubbish and recyclable materials from the Yarra Bay area.

Earth Hour

In 2010, Sydney Ports has again participated in the Earth Hour campaign by switching off non-essential lighting at several of its sites including: offices on Windmill Street, Kent Street and Hickson Rd and the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay. Tenants at Port Botany and Sydney Harbour were also encouraged to participate. Sydney Ports Corporation has been involved in this great Australian environmental initiative since its launch in Sydney in 2007.

Due to the nature of port operations (24/7) some areas of the port were unable to switch off lighting due to OH&S and navigational requirements however, Sydney Ports endeavours to participate in this great initiative as widely as possible.

Every Drop Counts Business Program

In efforts to reduce the water consumption of the organisation, Sydney Ports Corporation joined a water reduction program run by Sydney Water in 2008. The “Every Drop Counts Business Program” assists Sydney Ports in reducing our consumption of water through a variety of programs including: staff awareness campaigns, water management diagnostic sessions and audits of large water use sites.

At the beginning of the program Sydney Water conducted an audit of Sydney Ports to determine the “star rating” of our water management procedures. The initial rating Sydney Ports received was 1 star. After 2 years in the program we have increased our star rating to 2 stars, doubling our achievement score from 15% to 31%!
