Environmental Management

Sydney Ports Corporation is committed to the environmental protection and preservation of Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay, Enfield and Cooks River and adjacent port lands. This commitment is embodied in the Corporations environmental policy.

A key goal of the Corporation's vision statement is to protect the environment and have regard to the interests of the community.

The Corporations aim is to ensure a balance between the competing interests of the port, local communities and the environment.

Sydney Ports Corporation aims to minimise impacts on the community and the environment through a combination of strategies that include:

  • identification and qualification of potential risks
  • development of procedures to minimise risks to the public and the environment
  • careful monitoring of operations
  • application of modern environmental protection measures
  • maintenance of communication links with the various port communities
  • full compliance with all relevant legislation.

Port Safety Operating Licence (PSOL)

Sydney Ports Corporation is charged with fulfilling stringent conditions linking the safety of shipping with the preservation of the marine environment through the execution of its Port Safety Operating Licence (PSOL).

In addition to maintaining safe navigation in the ports for commercial shipping and administering the Dangerous Goods Regulations for Port Areas. Sydney Ports Corporation also has responsibility for emergency response to marine-based incidents and for the clean-up of any environmental spills.

In response to oil spills, Sydney Ports Corporation has responsibility for the Harbour, Botany Bay and for 90km of the NSW coastline for three nautical miles out to sea.

In fulfilling its duties, Sydney Ports Corporation works to ensure safe ports for all to enjoy.
