Sydney Sails to Record Cruise Season

NSW Treasurer and Minister for Ports and Waterways Eric Roozendaal today announced the 2010-11 Sydney cruise season will be the busiest on record – with 154 cruise ship visits scheduled into Sydney Harbour.

Mr Roozendaal and Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises and represents five other international cruise brands in Australia, today welcomed the first two ships into Sydney, marking the launch of the 2010 cruise season.

“The number of cruise ship visits this season confirms Sydney’s importance as Australia’s major cruise hub and its position as the leading cruise destination in Australia,” Mr Roozendaal said.

“This season, 154 passenger ships will visit Sydney – about a 30% increase on last year. It is also the first time passenger numbers are expected to break the 300,000 mark, injecting an estimated $190 million into the NSW economy.

“This record year comes as Sydney and Circular Quay celebrate 50 years of international cruise visits.

“We are also expecting 28 cruise ship visits in 28 days in February 2011. This again demonstrates the strength and popularity of the growing cruise industry in Sydney.”

“One of the highlights of the year will be on February 22 when Cunard’s new Queen Elizabeth and sister ship Queen Mary 2 will have a royal rendezvous on Sydney Harbour,” Mr Roozendaal said.
