This is also the first time she and her larger sister, Queen Mary 2, have met outside QM2’s homeports of Southampton and New York.

The meeting of the two Queens on Sydney Harbour is also the flagship event for Sydney’s record 2010/11 cruise season which sees 150 ship visits and approximately 300,000 passengers into Sydney Harbour.

Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 will meet off Sydney Heads shortly before 5.30am on February 22, before Queen Mary 2 leads her younger sister into the Harbour – the first time two Cunard liners have ever arrived in Sydney in tandem.

Three Sydney Ports Corporation vessels will escort the Queens up Sydney Harbour, led by the Fire Tug Ted Noffs, the fast response vessel Millers Point and a Sydney Ports pilot cutter vessel.

On her way to Garden Island – at approximately 6.30am - Queen Mary 2 will round Fort Denison, sounding her whistle as she passes Queen Elizabeth, which will be sailing towards her Circular Quay berth at the Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT).

The Queen Mary 2 will berth at Garden Island and the Queen Elizabeth at the Overseas Passenger Terminal by 7am.

Sydney is the first of Queen Elizabeth’s three Australian calls on her 103-night world voyage and the final Australian port on QM2’s 103-night world cruise.

Both ships will spend the night in Sydney Harbour with Queen Elizabeth set to farewell her magnificent larger sister with a whistle salute at midday on February 23 as she sails past her bound for Melbourne.

The Queen Mary 2 will then depart Sydney Harbour at 5.00pm on Wednesday 23 February.

Sydney Ports will provide both daily and weekly port performance reports for container operations at Port Botany using information provided daily by the stevedores and through Sydney Ports contracted staff who are independently collecting data at both terminals.

Objectives of the trials will be to:

Support greater transparency of industry supply chain performance.

Baseline current performance across the supply chain including terminals, carriers and empty parks.

Collect data (around peak and non-peak time periods) to validate the proposed performance measures in scope for each trial.

Calculate commercial pricing implications around operational performance measures and peak pricing.

Use the information collected from the trials as input into other project activities.

Use the trials to validate the internal Sydney Ports processes to collect, process and report on performance data.

Use the trials to refine the communication approach across the industry.

Ensure ongoing refinement of processes (refining recording methods, templates and reports) based on ‘lessons learnt’ from each trial.

NOTE: This is subject to legal advice and regulatory approval.

Sydney Ports would like to acknowledge the support of industry representatives in providing data and allowing the collection of data at both ports.

Trial 1: 16 Feb - 1 Mar 2009

Collate data to provide a baseline on current performance, including but not limited to:

Vehicle processing times within the terminals

Vehicle Booking System (VBS) utilisation

Carrier performance

Trial 2: 13 Apr - 26 Apr 2009

Validate commercial drivers against proposed performance measures

Volume test to measure performance during peak period

Application of lessons learnt from Trial 1

Trial 3: Mid June 2009

Application of lessons learnt from Trial 2

Mr Iemma said the Baulderstone Hornibrook–Jan de Nul consortium would build the new port facility, with construction to be complete by March 2011 and the first ship expected to berth and unload its containers in early 2012. The expressions of interest process to source a stevedore for the expanded area is also now open. Site preparation was completed at Port Botany last week, with project offices in place, the preparation of environmental plans, hiring of staff, progression of the design and consultation with community and stakeholders continues.

Dedicated road and rail facilities will also be developed to ensure efficient access with minimal disruption to the local community.

Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said the Iemma Government was committed to delivering key infrastructure to the people of NSW and at the same time minimising impact on local communities and the environment.

"Shipping is one of the most environmentally friendly transport methods for large quantities of goods in our global economy," Mr Tripodi said.

"The construction has been carefully staged to ensure minimal interference with existing port operations.

"A $30 million investment in environment and community facilities is also an integral part of delivering this expansion project.

"The community will reap the benefits of a new boat ramp, pedestrian bridge and a rejuvenated beach, while seagrass, saltmarsh and migratory shorebird habitat will benefit from environmental works."

Stevedore sought for expanded port

Sydney Ports Corporation today called for Expressions of Interest from parties wanting to provide stevedoring services at the new terminal at Port Botany. For details click here.

Sydney Ports Corporation sponsored the Agribusiness Award once again as part of its continued support of the Premier’s NSW Export Awards. The event was officially launched by <STRIKE></STRIKE>the Minister for Ports and Waterways and Small Business, T<STRIKE></STRIKE>he Hon Joe Tripodi.

Sydney Ports recognises the importance and value of the agricultural sector to exports through the ports and their contribution to the NSW and national economy.

As Sydney continues to grow, so does the demand for imports and exports and the pressure for the transportation and delivery of these goods. The current development of the Sydney Ports Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield will provide a key freight transport link to the management of Sydney's freight task.

The logistics centre will provide an opportunity to shift container freight away from trucks onto rail.

The ILC at Enfield will have a capacity of 300,000 TEUs and will move containers closer to points of delivery and collection.

As part of the Premier’s NSW Export Awards, Sydney Ports Senior Manager for Trade and Development Phil Rosser addressed the importance of Enfield in the logistics chain and talked about the strong trade growth which drives the need for new port infrastructure.

The number of export containers continues to increase. In 2006/07 369,622 TEUs were exported through the port. This number is forecast to increase to 380,000 TEUs in 2007/08. Sydney Ports further supports exporters by offering the lowest export wharfage of $51.15 including GST as compared <STRIKE></STRIKE>to Brisbane ($74.80 plus GST) on the East coast of Australia. <STRIKE></STRIKE>Sydney Ports has retained exporter competitiveness with no wharfage increases for full export containers over the last decade.

With the delivery of the expansion of Port Botany well underway to cater for the doubling of trade from current levels by 2020, intermodals will play an even more important role in the delivery of goods to and from the port.

The movement of container freight to and from the port is as big an issue as the capacity for the port itself. Currently 85 per cent of all containers destined for Sydney are delivered within 40 kilometres of Port Botany.

Therefore there is a need for a spread of intermodal terminals across the broader Sydney metropolitan area to enable better use of rail from the port, with final delivery of containers or cargo by road to areas not serviced by rail.

The Sydney Ports Intermodal Logistics Centre (ILC) at Enfield and the Cooks River site form part of the network of intermodal terminals that will help to cater for this growth in trade and the efficient delivery of goods.

The approved Enfield ILC is located on a dedicated freight rail line and close to the market where goods are distributed and has the capacity to service this demand.

It will also assist with the goal of achieving 40 per cent rail mode share targeted for containers to and from Port Botany.

The Cooks River site is also a Sydney Ports intermodal facility. This 17 hectare property currently has storage capacity of 10,500 TEU’s with plans to increase capacity in the future. The site is strategically placed in close proximity to Port Botany located on the Botany Freight Line and with access to the wider rail network. Cooks River provides for 20 per cent of empty container storage in Sydney which assists with the efficient movement of containers throughout the metropolitan area via rail.

Click here to read more about the Enfield ILC.

Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre – a step forward in the delivery

“The ILC at Enfield is a key link in the logistics chain if we are to move more containers on rail,” said Sydney Ports’ CEO, Grant Gilfillan.

“And with a throughput of 300,000 TEU’s, servicing the freight needs of inner and mid-western Sydney, the Intermodal Logistics Centre at Enfield will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Sydney basin.

“Design and Technical Advisory services are being sought for this critical infrastructure project, and this is the first step in the delivery of this project.”

For further information on the Registrations of Interest and the project click here.

For further information about the Intermodal Logistics Centre at Enfield click here.

Supporting the local community- the Festival of Kurnell

Visitors will have the opportunity to browse through 120 stalls showcasing multicultural art, crafts, food and wine and enjoy local entertainment that Kurnell and surrounding areas have to offer.

Sydney Ports values the local community around the port and continually strives to be a member of these communities.

At Kurnell we work in partnership with industry to protect the marine environment, assist with security and provide safe passage for vessels into and out of the port.
Sydney’s ports alone handle over $50 billion of international and domestic trade annually reflecting a remarkable contribution to the NSW economy. There are different types of trading vessels visiting the ports such as bulk carriers, container ships, car carriers, oil tankers, ferries and charter boats.

These large vessels need safe unobstructed access to our ports. On any given day there can be more than a dozen trading vessel movements and hundreds of recreational boats, naval and charter vessels on the water.

Knowing your responsibilities when you are close to trading vessels is essential to being safe on the water. Understanding the channels in busy harbours and ports will allow you to take the right course of action when you are near a large vessel.

Click here to access the "big ships, small boats" website.

Sydney Ports participates in a statewide oil spill exercise
