Sydney recorded one its most hectic cruise schedules to date in the month of February.
Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi said that February would go down as ‘Super February’, with Sydney receiving 28 cruise ships visits in 28 days, confirming the city as one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.
The highlight by far was the visits of four of the world’s largest super liners to the harbour city.
The arrival of the Queen Mary 2’s sister ship, Queen Victoria (Feb 19) kicked of the visits, followed by the Arcadia IV (Feb 20) which was making her maiden visit to Australia.
The Diamond Princess arrived two days later (Feb 22) followed by the grandest of all the liners the Queen Mary 2 (Feb 26).
This financial year has seen another increase in ship visits, with 120 cruise ships and over 250,000 passengers visiting Sydney which is up from the 101 visits last year.
The cruise industry is seen globally as the fastest growing segment of the tourism market.
The Australian cruise industry has grown substantially over recent years, with the number of cruise ship visits increasing by over 40% since 2005.
