Government Information Public Access (GIPA) Act 2009 (NSW)

GIPA is the instrument that provides for the release of certain information held by government departments and agencies to the public. Sydney Ports already provides a broad range of information that may be of interest to members of the public on this website which can be easily located by conducting a search of this site.

What is GIPA?

From 1 July 2010, GIPA replaces the Freedom of Information Act 1989 (NSW). GIPA provides mechanisms for members of the public to access information held by government departments including:

Mandatory Release

GIPA requires that Sydney Ports release the following information on its website:

• information about Sydney Ports contained in any document tabled in Parliament, other than any document tabled by order of either House of Parliament
• policy documents that affect or are likely to affect the rights or obligations of the public
• disclosure log of access applications
• a record of the mandatory release information (if any) that Sydney Ports does not make publicly available on the basis of an overriding public interest against disclosure
• register of contracts with third parties that are subject to the provisions of this Act

Informal Request

Any person may make a request for information through the Sydney Ports' general enquiries email address enquiries@sydneyports.com.au.

Sydney Ports will assess the request and a decision will be made whether to provide the requested information.

If information is not provided in response to an Informal Request, applicants have the right to make a formal Access Application.

Access Application

You can also make an Access Application for information held by Sydney Ports. An Access Application is a formal application under GIPA for information held by a government agency that can be made by any member of the public. There is a $30 application fee that must be paid when an Access Application is lodged with an agency.
